Money, Mindset & a Whole Lot of Girl Power

Say hello to Jodie… a woman who proves that confidence with money isn’t about being “good at maths”, it’s about feeling empowered, informed, and in control. She’s taken her own journey, full of courage and hard-earned clarity, and turned it into something that’s helping so many people breathe easier around their finances. We’re so excited to shine a spotlight on her story.
How you started and what led you to your career
I was diagnosed with dyslexia in primary school, and although it could have held me back, I was fortunate to have a teacher who genuinely believed in me. She explained that everyone has different strengths, English might not have been mine, but numbers were. That conversation sparked something inside me, and from that moment on I threw myself into Maths and anything number-related.
When I moved on to secondary school in Scotland, I chose Accountancy, Finance, and Business Studies as my Standard Grades and Highers (the equivalent of GCSEs and A Levels). I loved the subjects, even though I didn’t have the best relationship with the teachers at the time. I became determined to prove I was capable and worthy of being in her class and I did. I completed both qualifications successfully, which only deepened my interest. I later secured an internship at KPMG and then went on to study Accountancy at university. After university, I returned home to the island and completed my ACCA professional qualification, which I’m now proud to hold.
A huge part of my drive came from not growing up with much money. I was determined to build a different life for myself. I grew up on a Navy estate where most children naturally followed their parents into the Navy, but I knew it wasn’t the path for me. At school, we were always told, “work hard, get a good job, earn good money, and you’ll be happy.” That stuck with me, though I’ve since learned it isn’t entirely true.
I’ve never been the kind of accountant who’s content just working with numbers. I’ve always wanted more. That ambition allowed me to work closely with incredibly successful entrepreneurs, something I remain grateful for.
But about two years ago, despite earning extremely well as a CEO in the e-gaming sector, an industry I’d been in for over a decade, I hit a wall. I felt no job satisfaction. I was helping wealthy people become wealthier, but not making any meaningful difference. No matter how big the salary was, I felt lost and disconnected from any real purpose.
Then one day, I spoke to a local small business owner who had been charged £500 for a simple 10-minute conversation about cash flow. That moment changed everything for me. I realised I could use my knowledge to genuinely help people to guide them without making them feel overwhelmed or exploited.
That’s how The Financial Toolkit came to life, (thanks in part to a much-needed nudge from a few special people): a place where I could share simple, accessible, non-specific financial and business guidance with people who need it. The response has been overwhelming, and it has helped me reconnect with my purpose. Hearing from people who are struggling with their relationship with money or trying to grow their small business and knowing my guidance has helped them gain even a little financial empowerment reminds me exactly why I started.
Key moments or challenges you’ve faced
One of the key moments for me has been helping people turn an idea into a real, profitable business. So many people have incredible creativity and purpose, but they get overwhelmed by the “boring corporate stuff” that comes with running a business. I love being the person who gives them the tools, structure, and confidence to turn their dream into something real. I don’t just focus on finances, I support them with their commercial decision-making and financial awareness as both areas are completely intertwined.
Another standout moment was being asked to speak at an event in Ireland about financial empowerment and how people can build their own financial toolkit. It was one of the scariest but most exciting things I've done. I flew in the night before, spoke first at the event, and flew straight home afterwards. I joked that I felt like Beyoncé! The feedback afterwards was incredible and so encouraging.
In terms of challenges, I haven’t faced anything major yet other than managing my time as I have so much to share. I still have a full-time role that I genuinely love, working with someone who inspires me through their work ethic and family values.
Finding time to update social media and create content feels like having another child at times! But the love, feedback, and the possibility that even one person might stumble across my posts and feel encouraged keeps me going. If I can help someone shift their mindset about money, even just one person that feels more valuable than any pay cheque.
What I love
I love teaching people about money and showing them how simple it can be once you understand it. The world teaches us so many lies about money, and those beliefs block us from our desires and goals. True wealth is about creating a life where money empowers you, not one where it controls you. Money can feel intimidating or overwhelming, but I help people to build a strong and healthy relationship, which is one of the most powerful steps people can take towards growing confidence and clarity.
Through my content, I aim to empower people to help them feel confident instead of ashamed, informed instead of overwhelmed. I love supporting people with business ideas and giving them the belief and structure to turn those ideas into something real. People often get discouraged by the corporate or financial side of running a business, but that’s the part I get excited about. I help them build the foundations so they can focus on what lights them up.
I also love educating people about how finances and commercial thinking are connected. When you understand both, running a business becomes far simpler and far more successful.
Advice for Other Women Starting Out
As a mum of two girls and raised in a single parent house full of girls - Just do it. Surround yourself with people who believe fiercely in you and your dreams. They will be your cheerleaders and there to listen when your doubts try to take over. There is so much support out there, from other women and men, you just have to take the first step outside your comfort zone.
Someone out there needs your help, your service, or your product. Someone is waiting for you, and you might be the reason they see their own world differently.
This advice isn’t only for women, it's for everyone. Money education, financial literacy, and understanding the energy and emotions around money are so important.
Our negative beliefs (not just about money) often come from past experiences or old stories we’ve been told. But you can rewrite your story at any time. You can choose a way of thinking that supports the life you want.
Whatever you desire is possible when you shift your mindset and stay open to the possibility of change.
Great things are possible for you
(and I am still telling myself this!).
My Goal for the Future
My goal is to help as many people as I can rewrite their money story so they can achieve their purpose and desires. I want to educate and empower people around money and finances so they feel confident, not intimidated.
I believe financial education should be taught from primary school all the way through secondary school. These are life lessons everyone needs, from young adults managing their first wages to entrepreneurs building six-figure businesses. It should never be something people have to figure out alone.
Jodie’s the reminder we all need that it’s never too late to rewrite your money story, or your life one. Her honesty, heart, and commitment to helping others feel confident is exactly what Level Up is all about. We’re so proud to have her in our PowerWomen series, and we know her journey will spark something in you too. 💛
